Sweet Corn Season at HCM and the Benefits of Buying Local

Fresh Picked Corn on the CobIt’s that great time of year when freshly picked produce is in season, and you can find it here at HCM! We know local quality and great taste is important to you. That’s why we have produce grown right here by our sister company, Breezy Hill Nursery.

It doesn’t get much better than enjoying delicious veggies in the summer, whether they’re eaten fresh, grilled or sautéed. And having them locally grown is all the better.

Some reminders on the benefits of purchasing locally grown food:

Supports Your Local Community & Economy – When you purchase local food, you’re investing your money in what is important to you. You’re having a direct impact on what effects you and those you care about. In the big picture, you are supporting local families and businesses and boosting your local economy. Just a little bit of spending locally goes a long way! The stigma is out there that buying local means spending more, but this is not always the case. Food that is in season and has little distance to travel is often cheaper. If you are paying a bit more, it may benefit you to ask the question, isn’t it better to know that your money is going to build up your community and you’ll see it making a difference?

Connects You, The Customer – Purchasing local often gives you the opportunity to engage with and even build a relationship with those growing your food. You can have an impact on what you want to see as a customer and have greater knowledge about what you are purchasing.

Frankly, It Tastes Better. No really! – When food is fresh, recently harvested and didn’t have to travel long distances in preservatives and other packing materials, it simply tastes better. It also encourages you to eat what is in season and this benefits your body, greatly.

So, savor this time of year that the weather is warm, delicious local foods are in season and winter is still a distant thought. Find just what you need here at HCM and enjoy this time with friends and family. Make the cookouts great and the memories greater.

July Cheese and Wine of the Month

The summer weather is here and now it’s the perfect time to indulge in the bold and decadent flavors of the season. Enjoy great food with friends and family and make this summer one of your finest. We’ve chosen this month’s cheese and wine with the intent of spoiling you. So take a look and then stop in to get them and enjoy with loved ones.

Cheese of the Month:

Saint André Triple Creme Soft-Ripened Cheese

If summer is the perfect time to indulge in bold, rich flavors then Saint André Triple Creme does not disappoint. This French cheese, made from pasteurized cow’s milk, offers a deliciously buttery taste. If you’re looking to treat yourself this summer, this is one cheese you’ll want to have on your plate. Just listen to this dreamy description from Ile De France,

“As dense as pure butter and with the richest of flavors, the tongue-pleasing salty tang derives from the ocean air blowing through the pâturages of the Normandy coast. Produced in the shadow of the mystical island of Mont Saint-Michel, St. André cheese is just as breathtaking as the landscape of the surrounding Cotentin Peninsula” (Ile De France, St. André, www.iledefrancecheese.com).

In other words, yum. Be sure to pick up Saint André Triple Creme today.

Wine of the Month:

Château Grande Cassagne Rosé

This Rosé, originating from France, will make a great addition to your summer table. Rosé wines are ideal to have on hand in the summer as you enjoy a variety of foods, often all at once. Maybe you’re having steak, seafood and salad at your next house party, so grabbing a delicious Rosé to keep the palate nice and balanced is a no-brainer. Adding a fruit bowl to that dinner? Try also adding some fruit such as raspberries, strawberries or orange to your Rosé to give it just the right touch. Château Grande Cassagne Rosé boasts tangy cherry and blood orange flavors with hints of spice. Just the right flavors to match the feeling of summer.

Cooking Tips from Chef Kate: Mise En Place

Utensils_FormChef Kate has a wealth of helpful little tips that make a big difference in the kitchen. Take a look at this week’s helpful tips and try applying them to your kitchen experience.

Ingredients & Prep:

“Mise En Place…French word, (since I graduated from a French culinary school), meaning, get all your ingredients together and ready to roll!!!!!”

Cooking:

gemüsekorb“Anytime you use raw onions in a cold salad, guacamole, salsa, etc., be sure to rinse the onions under cold water first then blot or shake from a strainer to rid the water residue. This will get rid of the sulfurous gas that can make your salad or salsa taste too potent.”

Kate has a wealth of cooking experience and she’s ready to have us share some of her best cooking tips here on our blog. But before we do, we thought you might like to get to know her better.

Here’s a bit more about Kate’s background and how she came to join us at HCM:

Chef Kate’s, “LONG STORY SHORT”

Kate Coronado, the chef and manager of Hill Country Market’s kitchen, has been a part of the company since April, 2014. During her high school years, Kate developed an interest in cooking through her Home Economics class where they focused mainly on different areas of culinary arts. From there she has worked in many different restaurants starting from the front of the house, leading to the back of the house.

After many years of married life and being a stay-at-home mom, she finally decided that it was time to attend a french culinary school and achieve her degree. Since her graduation, she has worked at many fine establishments starting in the banquet kitchens of hotels, to fine dining and casual restaurants, and then gradually arriving at Hill Country Market as their chef.

Chef Kate emphasizes using fresh ingredients in her cooking. She also helps provide catering for corporate and private events, holiday parties, and for their monthly wine tasting events.

From her interest in cooking to managing a kitchen, Kate has come a long way to becoming what she has always desired. A Chef.

With the fresh taste of Washington apples, natural peach and hints of blackberries and strawberries, Sweet Pea features a crisp and clean finish, similar to a Riesling.
