Cooking Tips from Chef Kate

Utensils_FormToday, Chef Kate has some quick, helpful tips for prep and cooking in the kitchen, including creating your own vinaigrette dressings.

Ingredients & Prep:

“Take the time to read the recipes thoroughly before you shop and begin the process. Doing so can help you get through the ingredient shopping more efficiently.”

Cooking:

Homemade Wholegrain mustard vinaigrette by fresh ingredients

Homemade vinaigrette dressings have fewer ingredients and taste better than bottled ones. No need to whisk, just put all the ingredients in a sealed container and shake! The best thing about creating your own vinaigrette is that you get to control the quality of what goes in it. Plus, creating your own can often be more economical.”

Meet Chef Kate

Utensils_FormHill Country Market not only features a market with a unique selection of local, gluten free, and organic products, but also a deli/kitchen that creates delicious lunches every day. From tasty sandwiches, wraps and salads to custom-cut steaks and fresh deli salads, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Our wonderful kitchen staff is lead by kitchen manager, Chef Kate. Kate has a wealth of cooking experience and she’s ready to have us share some of her best cooking tips here on our blog. But before we do, we thought you might like to get to know her better.

Here’s a bit more about Kate’s background and how she came to join us at HCM:

Chef Kate’s, “LONG STORY SHORT”

Kate Coronado, the chef and manager of Hill Country Market’s kitchen, has been a part of the company since April, 2014. During her high school years, Kate developed an interest in cooking through her Home Economics class where they focused mainly on different areas of culinary arts. From there she has worked in many different restaurants starting from the front of the house, leading to the back of the house.

After many years of married life and being a stay-at-home mom, she finally decided that it was time to attend a french culinary school and achieve her degree. Since her graduation, she has worked at many fine establishments starting in the banquet kitchens of hotels, to fine dining and casual restaurants, and then gradually arriving at Hill Country Market as their chef.

Chef Kate emphasizes using fresh ingredients in her cooking. She also helps provide catering for corporate and private events, holiday parties, and for their monthly wine tasting events.

From her interest in cooking to managing a kitchen, Kate has come a long way to becoming what she has always desired. A Chef.

With the weather quickly warming up, we think it’s time for your food to as well. This month, we’ve selected a cheese and wine with warm coloring, flavors and excellent quality. Take a look and inspire your taste buds this April.

This month’s cheese pick is from Moondarra Cheese. Moondarra is an Australian based company known for quality, fresh ingredients and innovative flavored cheeses. Their honey and pistachio cheese is no exception. This quality cheese is rolled in honey and covered in pistachio. With a smooth, creamy texture, it’s the perfect spreadable cheese for a party or gathering.

Looking for a spin on traditional wine? Try our wine of the month, Sweet Pea Apple Wine. This wine is a refreshing detour from traditional grape wines. With the fresh taste of Washington apples, natural peach and hints of blackberries and strawberries, Sweet Pea features a crisp and clean finish, similar to a Riesling. It’s the perfect kick-off to spring and the upcoming summer. Grab this light and fruity wine, some friends, and enjoy a relaxing evening on the patio.
